Dr. Austin Oprean is an active performer, educator, and arts administrator based in Traverse City, Michigan. Currently serving as Facility Coordinator at the Traverse City Philharmonic Center and Community Music School, Austin manages facility operations, assists with orchestral personnel management and music library responsibilities, and contributes to innovative program development for the community music school. Notably, he has played a key role in the development of the new TCPhil Community Music School in both its programs and operations.
Dr. Oprean is a member of the Traverse Symphony Orchestra and has regularly performed with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Alluvion Big Band, and internationally in Canada and Cuba. Recently, he performed as a trombonist in the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth World Tour at Shea's Performing Arts Center in Buffalo, NY. His previous performance highlights include appearances with the Broadway Touring Cast of "Chicago: The Musical," Rochester Symphony Orchestra, and Altoona Symphony Orchestra.
As an educator, Austin has taught at the esteemed Interlochen Center for the Arts for students of all ages and previously served as Adjunct Instructor of Trombone at the University at Buffalo. His extensive teaching background also includes positions at Interlochen Arts Academy, FredBrass Institute, and numerous public schools across Michigan. Additionally, he has maintained a private teaching studio for over a decade, guiding students to successful musical careers.
Dr. Oprean earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in performance from Michigan State University under the tutelage of Professor Ava Ordman. His dissertation, "A New Approach: On Adapting Mindfulness Principles to Collegiate Music Education," emphasizes the integration of mindfulness practices into music education. Passionate about mindfulness as a tool for enhancing performance and mental well-being, Austin completed his mindfulness teacher certification in 2022 through the Mindfulness Institute for Emerging Adults (formerly Koru).
Austin holds a Master's degree and Professional Performer Certificate from Penn State University, where he studied with Professor Mark Lusk and served as Graduate Teaching Assistant for the Trombone and Jazz departments, directing the Outer Dimensions Jazz Band. He completed his Bachelor’s degree at the Cleveland Institute of Music, studying with Massimo LaRosa.
Outside of his professional commitments, Austin enjoys reading, rock climbing, and playing board and video games with friends.
